Why Argentina?

In the last few years, many Latin American countries have promoted a Plain Language policy from their public bodies. They shared a common goal: to make communication between the State and citizens clear, direct, effective and, above all, accessible. At a domestic level, plain language broke new boundaries and as such, it met resistance among some parties. However, the awareness-raising work carried out in the region and the demonstration of the benefits from its implementation generated actions with visible results.

Argentina did a research survey on plain language initiatives in Latin American Judicial Departments. According to the report written by International Open Justice Network, 92 actions in 10 of the 20 surveyed countries up to August 2022 have been counted. Countries with the highest number of initiatives are Argentina (34), Brazil (13), Mexico (12) and Chile (4). Consciousness-raising programs, regulations, public policies, publications - guides, manuals and networking - are highlighted among those first steps.

City of Buenos Aires

  • There are several initiatives for plain language implementation in Latin America, both in state and private sectors. We highlight the significant improvements in Argentina, as well as Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

  • Argentina, as well as several countries in the region, has institutionalized plain language and created specific institutions in order to plan training and research.

  • The City of Buenos Aires is a strategic scenario to welcome lecturers and prestigious Spanish-speaking leaders.

  • "PLAIN’s International Congress 2023" in the City of Buenos Aires is an opportunity to consolidate Spanish plain language and strengthen what has been done.

  • It is an opportunity for OLC to become a landmark in order to boost the state departments’ awareness. It will also allow us to work together in Latin America plain language institutionalization.

  • The recent launching of the Pan-Hispanic Plain Language Network, promoted by the Spanish Royal Academy, shows the interest in the importance of the movement in the region. The subscribed institutions are committed to working jointly in the implementation of actions in order to create initiatives, projects and measures which promote, announce and make plain language useeasier not only in their organizations, but also in other State departments. The aims of those actions are to increase the efficiency in the use of state resources, to foster transparency, accountability, participation and access to public information.
